I was inspired by the 08th MS Team OVA, and wanted to capture the realistic essence of war, the core of Gundam's story. My entry takes place in a covert Federation factory in East Asia, guarded by a lone surviving GM who gets ambushed by invading Zeon forces. Knowing that his location would be revealed, the GM uses the beam rifle as a last resort of self-defence. The surrounding area of the factory represents the age, weariness, and destruction that conflict has wrought onto humanity. The lone boy standing on the road (taken from the RG Unicorn Gundam) represents the futility and the innocent suffering that the One Year War has brought upon humanity. The GM was customised with an additional cannon taken from the HG GM (Shoulder cannon), with extra panel lines, pla-plate and a custom paint scheme. I wanted to customise the Zaku in a darker green paint scheme to contrast with the indigo blue tones of the GM. To enhance the realism of the One Year War, I decided to heavily weather the two Mobile Suits by shading, dry brushing, and even adding scratches and ruptures in the hull of the armour. For the surrounding environment, I used foam and moulding clay to create the rocky terrain and uneven surface of the diorama. I sponge-painted and dry-brushed the terrain, building up the colours layer by layer to increase the depth of the terrain created by the moulding clay. Furthermore, the central building was created using pla-plate, spare runner pieces and clay, with the details on the exterior and interior handprinted to bring out the sense of scale and detail in the piece.
