Rain of Explosives
Cody Fan
My concept is a soldier in the middle of war, retreating from heavy fire on the battlefield. I lightly airbrushed and dry brushed the Gundam to give it a dirty appearance, emphasizing a war-like theme. The Gundam was scribed and panel-lined. I wrapped a wire around the Gundam's arm to represent a missile that had missed its target. The missile was made from plastic, which I filed and shaped to resemble a missile. To simulate a smoke trail, I used cotton attached to the missile's ends and painted it in a gradient of yellow, orange, and red to create an explosive or firing effect. The wires and cotton were attached using glue diluted with water. I also tried to blend the wires into the cotton by airbrushing them white to make them less visible. For the terrain, I used a large piece of torn cork trivet table mat to create a deformed landscape. I glued dirt and placed rocks between the gaps of the cork and around the edges of the diorama to make it look more natural. The base was constructed using foam. The explosions were made with cotton dipped in orange, then painted with yellow and red. The tips of the explosions were shaped using metal wires to give them form and simulate a blast effect. I also included a broken tank, which I spray painted and dry brushed with a layer of brown to match the battlefield theme. The toy tank used in the diorama is also in 1/144 scale.
